In this listing, we define a bar as an establishment whose major function is the serving of alcoholic beverages in a social environment. Bars which charge admission are not included here. Unless otherwise indicated, the majority of bars listed here are populated primarily by gay white males.

EAST VILLAGE
Boy Bar, 15 St. Marks Place (212) 674-7959. Open 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. daily. Young gay East Village crowd. Very quiet Sundays through Wednesdays, but with 2-for-1 drinks till 11 p.m. and an interesting jukebox, it can be a comfortable place to chat with friends after a movie, play, or dinner. Thursday, Boy Bar comes alive with cabaret entertainment, live D.J., and dancing. Can be lots of fun; if not, there's always The Bar on Fourth Street. Boy Bar also has the only Ping Pong table in a New York gay bar, and it's free.
The Bar, 68 Second Avenue at Fourth Street (212) 674-9714. Open 12 noon to 4 a.m. A fun, lively East Village bar, The Bar offers reasonably priced drinks at all times, a pool table, and a great new pinball machine. This is not a bar in which to exercise your attitude, it's a bar for free spirits to be themselves and have fun.
Tunnel Bar, 116 First Avenue at Seventh Street (212) 777-9232. Open noon to 4 a.m. For the gay Eastsider who misses Ty's or Rawhide from the West Side. Tunnel events include: movies on Mondays at 7:30, a pool tournament on Tuesdays, and a free buffet Saturday afternoons. Tunnel Bar also features a number of drink price. specials.
WEST VILLAGE
a.m. daily. This bar has seen better days and will hopefully see them again. With wonderful bartenders and a great jukebox, this is not a bar to dismiss easily. Drinks are reasonably priced and well poured.
Carr's, 204 West 10th Street, (212) 243-2191. Open 3 p.m. to 4 a.m. daily. A small neighborhood bar for the mature crowd.
Christopher's, 115 Christopher Street (212) 255-1660. Open 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. weekdays, till 4 a.m. weekends. The bar is well designed and comfortable, with half-price drinks from 5-7 p.m. weekdays. Christopher's is a great place to escape from the busier bars on Christopher Street, when you want a relaxed environment to talk with a friend. Now featuring live entertainment on Friday evenings.

The Duplex, 55 Grove Street (212) 255-5438. Open 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., which hours comprise a Happy Hour. Friendly neighborhood piano bar, featuring Mr. Ruby Rims bartending most afternoons. The Duplex gets into full swing around 9 p.m., when the live music begins. The Duplex also has cabaret entertainment upstairs. Call or drop by for information.
Greenwich Pub, 73 Eighth Avenue at 14th Street, (212) 243-9218. Open 12 noon to 4 a.m. A bar with a small stage, the Greenwich Pub offers a full schedule of events, from a Gong Show on Tuesdays, Go-Go Boys on Wednesdays, and a talent night on Thursdays. A special show on Fridays and Saturdays. carries a $5 cover charge. Sundays there's a Tea Dance from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Greenwich Pub has a mostly latino clientele.
J's, 675 Hudson Street at 14th Street, (212) 242-9292. Open 3 p.m. to 4 a.m. Located right in the middle of the meatpacking district, J's is very much a cruise. bar. Happy hour till six.
Julius, 159 West 10th Street, (212) 929-9672. Open 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday noon to 4 a.m. One of the oldest bars in the city, opening in 1864, Julius has a feeling of tradition and permanence. Happy hour is from 5:30 to 8:30 weekdays, with the grill open every evening, serving the "Julius Burger," one of the best hamburgers in the Boots and Saddle, 76 Village. Open 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. weekdays; from 2 p.m. weekends. A very popular piano bar with the most plant life of any gay bar I've seen in the world. A festive attitude is the order of the
day every day at the Monster. Disco dancing" downstairs seven nights a week. $5 cover weekends.
9th Circle, 139 West 10th Street, (212) 243-9204. Open noon to 4 a.m. daily. A very young crowd practicing a very old profession. The Ninth Circle was once a bar for the creative young gay set and their friends exploring their hopes, dreams, and sexuality. Those original inhabitants who gave the bar its life often return to the Ninth Circle, whose interior hasn't changed much since those heady days of the early 1970s.
Ramrod, 394 West Street, (212) 929-9718. Open 1 p.m. to 4 a.m. daily, this Levi/leather bar at the bottom of Christopher Street now features live D.J.s on Saturday and Sunday evenings. Also brunch
weekend afternoons.
Sneakers, 392 West Street, (212) 242-9830. Open 12 noon to 4 a.m. daily. With sneakers hanging from the ceiling, it's hard to imagine this bar anywhere other than West Street. Situated between the Ramrod and Badlands, Sneakers features Bingo Monday through Thursday evenings. That's right, I said Bingo!
Trilogy, 135 Christopher Street, (212) 242-6753. Open 12 noon to 4 a.m. Elegant design for a
somewhat affluent, good
looking clientele. Happy hour from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. Trilogy has a restaurant in the back.
Two Potato, 143 Christopher Street, (212) 2429304. Open 12 noon to 4 a.m. A rather large Western-style bar with a prominent pool table. Two Potato, a recent arrival to Christopher Street, is still building a clientele. Movies every Tuesday night at 9 p.m.
Ty's, 114 Christopher Street, (212) 741-9641. Open 1 p.m. to 4 a.m. A very popular West Side bar, heavy on the moustaches. Ty's offers reduced price drinks weekdays 4 to 8 p.m. Movies at 3 p.m. on Wednsdays and well mixed taped disco every evening. They have Schnapps night
every Tuesday and Thursday, 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Uncle Charlie's Downtown, 54 Greenwich Avenue, (212) 255-8787. Open 3 p.m. to 4 a.m. A very popular Village bar among yuppies and young attitude queens. Some handsome young men, but you'll find most will keep their distance, and forget about that second date. Happy hour from 5 to 8. p.m. weekdays are very crowded and can be fun.
Live D.J.s play Saint-style disco from classic, Jim and Michael, to modern, Bob.
Sunday is "Rock Night" with domestic beers one dollar all night. Two large video screens keep you up to date with cable and network moments you might have missed. There are movies every Monday at 8 p.m. Dynasty Wednesdays at 10 p.m.
CHELSEA
Barbary Coast, 64 Seventh Avenue at 14th Street, (212) 675-0385. Open 8 a.m. to 4 a.m. daily. Historical, this bar has been here for a while. It's half of what was once-a bank at the turn of the century. Next time you're in, take a look at the beautiful ceiling woodwork. Friendly and sometimes very entertaining bartenders. The jukebox is a plus: lotsa Patsy Kline.
Billy's Chelsea Bar, 232 Eighth Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets (212) 929-9684. Open 8 a.m. to 4 a.m.; Sunday noon to 4 a.m. With a clean, high-tech design, Billy's is for sitting at the bar and chatting with friends and neighbors. Friendly, well-built bar-
tenders keep the evenings lively and make patrons
feel welcome. Movies are on Monday evenings at 9:30 with reduced price drinks during the film. There is

Monday is movie night at 11 p.m. Tuesday is "Club Night" with groups such as a gay motorcyle club meeting once a month at The Spike. Sunday there's a "Beer Blast" party from 6 UPPER WEST SIDE to 10 p.m., with beer only 754.
MIDTOWN
Crossroads, 858 Ninth Avenue between 55th and 56th Streets, (212) 2459565. Open 2 p.m. to 4 a.m. Just above Midtown, this bar carries that energy in a fine neighborhood bar. Happy hour 2 to 7 p.m. weekdays. Sundays $1 Schnapps all day, and hot dogs free on Saturdays and Sundays. Music is provided via tapes with a modern sound.
Regent East, 204 East 58th Street, (212) 355-9465. Open 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Inner circle of East Side gay professionals. Atmosphere much like that of an English gentleman's club. This piano bar has a happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m.
Rounds, 303 East 53rd Street at 2nd Avenue. (212) 593-0807. Open 4 p.m. to 4
a.m.
Uncle Charlie's South, 550 Third Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets. Open 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. weekdays; 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. weekends. A bar with a very busy look to it, with video everywhere and many special events. Somehow it maintains an atmosphere that is great for meeting and talking with friends. Charlie's South features 2-for-1 happy hours Monday through Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and all evening on Tuesdays. Wednesday there is free pizza following Dynasty. Movies are shown every Monday at 8. There are also video games, a pool table, and a live D.J. every evening.
Boot Hill, 317 Amsterdam Avenue at 75th Street, (212) 874-8068. Open 2 p.m. to 4 a.m. A Levi's bar in which neighborhood conversation prevails. Friendly, small bar with a high alcohol content. Monday is movie night at 10:30. Reduced price drinks weekdays from 2-9 p.m.
Works, 428 Columbus Avenue between 80th and 81st Streets, (212) 799-7365. Open 2 p.m. to 4 a.m. daily. One of the most popular of the Upper West Side bars. The Works, with its high-tech design, offers a variety of features to its very diverse neighborhood clientele. Every Sunday there's a benefit to raise money for the Gay Men's Health Crisis. Beginning at 6 p.m. there is free beer till 10 p.m. for a donation of four dollars. The Works's patrons have raised almost $20,000 to date. Happy hour is from 5-9 p.m. weekdays, with 2-for-1 drinks, 50¢ drafts every Wednesday from 9 to midnight. Live D.J.s keep the evenings hopping with a fine sound system and high quality video presentation.
